Year 7 Careers Aim: To develop an understanding of what careers education is and why it is important. To understand how careers fits in with their learning journey at Brian Clarke Academy and the wider community. Students will be introduced to our careers learning platform Unifrog.
Rationale: This year is viewed as the foundational stage in their career journey and the focus is on their understanding of what careers education is and why it is important. Students will gain insight into our context by looking at the community and careers past and present, researching local role models and developing an understanding of local labour market information. Students will also begin to explore their interests and motivations and focus on developing a broader understanding of the world of work.
Careers Sessions: What is CEIAG and why is it important?
During the first term all students in year 7 complete the Future Skills Questionnaire which allows a greater understanding of their current knowledge of careers and post 14 and post 16 destinations. It helps us to identify gaps in their knowledge and plan sessions that will help create a responsive careers programme meeting the individual needs of each student. Throughout the first term students gain an understanding of what Careers Education is and how this fits in with their school journey. Students reflect on the transition from primary into secondary and what will come at Post 16. Students begin to explore their own strengths and interests as well as their backgrounds, creating a careers family tree.
Careers Sessions: Community and Careers
In the second term the careers programme links to our ethos, values and house system by focusing on our community in terms of careers, what people did in the past and now in the present. We introduce students to Local Labour Market information and trends so that they can gain an understanding of what people in their local community do for work. They will start to be introduced to the language and terminology linked to careers such as salary, wages and employer, but their focus will be on understanding that the character strengths that the school encourages, and values are also employability skills.
Careers Sessions: Diversity in the workplace
Year 7 students will be introduced to the Equality Act (2010), protected characteristics and the value that diversity can bring to a workplace. Students will have previous knowledge and understanding from Citizenship lessons. Through these sessions they will understand that the character strengths of compassion, open mindedness and respect are also employability skills. Students will also create their own ‘Unifrog’ account and begin to explore the site, completing activities on personal qualities and skills they already have that are transferable to the workplace.
Enterprise Challenge: Students will be involved in an ‘Enterprise Challenge’ that will encourage communication, teamwork and co-operation skills.
