Year 10 Aim: To support students through the next phase of their academic journey and prepare them for choices at post 16. To continue to build aspirations and allow students the opportunity to explore careers opportunities in more detail, including challenging stereotypes. To fully prepare students for work experience and to understand the world of work
Rationale: This year students build on the work in Key stage 3 but recognises they are making the transition into Key Stage 4 and the start of their GCSE journey. Students will continue to focus on exploring opportunities within different sectors, challenging stereotypes and preparing for the world of work, including a work experience placement. Students will learn more about health and safety laws, the equality act and how to apply for jobs, including contacting employers and attending mock interviews.
Careers Sessions: World of work
Students learn about Health and Safety in the workplace by looking at key legislation. Students also learn about the Equality Act and how that protects people from discrimination in the workplace. Students learn how to write CV’s and cover letters in preparation for their work experience placement and use the unifrog online tool to reflect on their own interests in terms of career path in the future.
Students will learn how to research possible placement, reflecting on their own interests, skills and strengths. They will learn how to contact employers and learn practical skills they need to feel confident when approaching potential employers. Students will also learn about how to behave in the workplace and what is expected from both them and the employer. Students will prepare for interviews and take part in a mock interview at school before attending their work experience placement. They will also learn about how to use social media and personal branding to impact their own career opportunities.
Careers Sessions: Post 16 Pathways
Students will learn how to compare the different pathways available to them after school, including education, employment and apprenticeships. Students will consider the different pathways in terms of what may be more suitable to them, linking to their interests, skills and ability. Students will explore specific subjects and the potential careers they could pursue in that field. Students will have their first pathways meeting with our designated careers adviser who will offer impartial advice and support around the next phase of their academic journey at post 16. Students will complete their first application form to college or an apprenticeship provider.
Enterprise Activity- Students will be involved in an ‘Enterprise Event’ that will encourage communication, teamwork and co-operation skills.
Work Experience
Students will be expected to undertake a work experience placement during Year 10- this may be virtual but, in most cases, will be in person.
