At Brian Clarke Academy, our main platform for Home Learning in German is www.languagenut.com. This online platform enables us to upload all the bespoke vocabulary that the pupils will learn at Key Stage 3 (Years 7 – 9). The Home Learning tasks are designed to consolidate learning which is taking place in the classroom each day. Languagenut is a highly motivational programme, and we are very proud of the pupils, who entered the national competitions last year. We had several winners, who were awarded Amazon vouchers for their achievements. We are delighted with the impact on pupils’ learning and motivation that Languagenut affords.
We know that you will want to support your child’s progress in German, so we’ve put together this information to explain how Languagenut works and why it is important to make sure that German Home Learning is completed.
How does Languagenut Home Learning work?
Languagenut allows pupils to practise the vocabulary through reading and listening tasks. This not only allows the pupils to develop their linguistic knowledge but also allows them to develop their skills in these areas.
Every two weeks, different sets of vocabulary will be assigned on Languagenut by your child’s German teacher and in lessons, pupils will be given a Masters of Knowledge vocabulary sheet (stuck into their Masters of Knowledge book) to complete whilst learning and consolidating the vocabulary online.
What does completion of Languagenut Home Learning tasks look like?
To ensure full completion of Home Learning tasks in German, pupils must:
The listening and reading exercises have a gamification element to them to enhance motivation. The four activities that need to be completed every two weeks online are:
These activities should take between 15 – 20 minutes to complete.
Although Languagenut is an online system, there is also an important written element to the fortnightly tasks. Pupils need to write out the vocabulary they have been learning next to the German / English equivalent. The written part of the Home Learning should take approximately 10 minutes to complete. An example of the Masters of Knowledge vocabulary sheet can be found by clicking on the link below.
Two weeks later in class, pupils’ Masters of Knowledge vocabulary sheets will be checked for full completion by the class teacher and pupils will retrieve their knowledge through a short quiz. There will be 5 words or phrases in German for the pupils to write in English and 5 words or phrases in English for the pupils to write in German.
Languagenut is set every other week on Wednesday morning at 9am and pupils have until two weeks laterto complete the online tasks and the written Masters of Knowledge vocabulary sheet. If the Masters of Knowledge vocabulary sheets are not 100% completed, then this will be classed as an incomplete Home Learning. If your child does not complete their Home Learning you will be notified via MCAS and we would ask you to support us in encouraging your child to complete their incomplete Languagenut tasks and / or Masters of Knowledge vocabulary sheets after school that day.
Why does my child need to complete the Masters of Knowledge vocabulary sheet
Home Learning is not marked as complete until the vocabulary has been written down correctlyonthe Masters of Knowledge vocabulary sheet. This is to ensure that all pupils consolidate the vocabulary in a productive form as vocabulary is the key to success in language learning.
We offer lots of opportunities for support with Languagenut during school time. It is therefore advised that pupils do their Home Learning as early as possible, so they have time to have a go themselves and / or seek help at a support club if needed.
Support clubs run as below:

How can I help my child with their Home Learning?
We appreciate that you will of course want to support your child with their Home Learning so please do get them to say the words out loud to you. You may want to use the completed Masters of Knowledge vocabulary sheet to quiz your child on the vocabulary in either German or English as this will help with retention and best prepare them for the Masters of Knowledge quiz in class. You do not need to know any German yourself to help your child to quiz. They have an excellent phonetic knowledge and will be able to sound the words out for you.
You can keep track of your child’s Languagenut completion in the weekly emails you will receive from Languagenut but their maths teacher will be tracking their progress and will alert you to any concerns directly. If you do not receive any emails from Languagenut then please let us know.
